I think all my fellow mommas out there would agree that baby carriers are a must have! Whether you want to take your little one on walks, hikes or just wear around the house…baby carriers make this so much easier. Your baby is quickly going to become heavy, even within a few months, and you aren’t going to want to hold them all the time. A lot of babies, when fussy, loved to be held and walked around. Baby carriers make this so easy, they allow your baby to be close to you but for you to have your hands free. You will be using your baby carrier a lot, so make sure you get the best baby carrier for you.

I use mine all the time. Around the house, hiking, shopping, in church, etc. Trust me, they are a life saver! There are so many different carriers out there though. You have some that look like backpacks (and wear very similar to backpacks) & you have wraps. You also have carriers specific to hiking. Let’s look at the best carriers & hopefully you can find one that will be right for you. I’ll break them down by your typical baby carriers (backpack type), wraps & then some hiking carriers. Let’s start with the typical baby carriers & look at the best baby carriers.

Typical Baby Carrier

ErgoBaby

The Ergo Baby Carrier is one of the carriers that I have, and LOVE it. ErgoBaby is a brand that offers a couple different carriers. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with any of them. I want to help you mommas narrow down your options though, so let’s focus on the most popular two, the Original and the 360 (but again, you can look at all the options they offer – you might find one that is better for you).

Let’s start with the Original ErgoBaby. This is, of course, their original design. It may be their original…but that doesn’t make the other ones better. This is one of the carriers I have (the original) and I love it. Here are some great aspects with the Original ErgoBaby Carrier:

  • Lifetime Guarantee: they will replace the carrier or part
  • Wide Age Range
    • about 4-48 months
    • with infant insert, will carry 0-4 months too
  • Machine Washable
  • Adjustable
  • Zippered Pocket
  • Breastfeed in Carrier
  • Comfortable Shoulder Straps
  • Privacy Hood: A hood that will come up over your baby’s head
  • Lumbar Support
  • Lightweight
  • Multiple colors/patterns
  • Multi-position Carrier
    • Front Facing (facing parent)
    • On your hip
    • Back Carry (wear like a regular backpack)

The ErgoBaby 360 is very similar to the Original however it has a few more features. If you plan on wearing your baby a lot, especially as they grow, this might be a better option for you. The 360 is made with the same great, durable material (with the same warranty) it is just a little more functional. Here are some of the aspect of the 360:

  • Lifetime Guarantee: will replace the carrier or defective part
  • Great for Older Babies: 4-48 months (12-45 lbs)
  • Machine Washable
  • Adjustable
  • Breastfeed in Carrier
  • Comfortable Shoulder Straps
  • Lumbar Support
  • Lightweight
  • Multiple Colors/Patters
  • ALL POSITION Carrier
    • Front facing (facing parent)
    • Front facing (facing out)
    • On your Hip
    • Back Carry

Infantino

Infantino is another company that makes multiple baby carriers (they also carry other baby products like nursing products, bath products, etc.). Again, we will focus on the most popular one, the Infantino Flip 4-in-1 Convertible Carrier. This carrier is on the lower end of the price range, but it is still an awesome buy. What is nice about this one is that it is at a lower price point but it still does the job of being able to carry your baby, from 8-32 pounds. Some other aspects of the Infantino 4-in-1 you’ll want to know:

  • Supportive belt: supportive waist belt transfers the weight to your hips (making carrying MUCH easier on you)
  • Comfortable shoulder straps
  • Narrow & Wide Seating Positions
  • Includes Bib: used to protect the carrier and your clothes
  • Machine Washable
  • Adjustable: adjustable seat, leg openings, straps & waist belt
  • Mulit-Position Carrier
    • Front Facing (facing parent – narrow seat)
    • Front Facing (facing parent – wide seat)
    • Facing Out
    • Back Carry

Baby Bjorn

Baby Bjorn offers a couple different carriers, two that really stand out though. Baby Carrier Mini and Baby Carrier One Air. The Baby Carrier Mini is one of their best-sellers, however it is more for newborns. This carrier will carry your little one from newborn to 12 months. The Baby Carrier One Air though will last much longer in terms of how long you can wear your baby. Either of them would be a great option, just depends on how long you plan on using it. If you are looking for a carrier for your newborn, go with the mini carrier. The One Air carrier however will last up to 3 years old, so you will be able to use this one much longer.

Since you can use the One Air Carrier longer, I want to focus on this one. Here are some other awesome aspects of this carrier:

  • Airy Mesh Fabric: made almost entirely from mesh, helps cool the places where you sweat
  • Machine Washable
  • Breathable Material
  • Comfortable, padded shoulder straps
  • Grows with baby: will grow with your little one from newborn to toddler
  • Built in infant insert
  • Multi-Sized: has flexible straps to fit parents size XS-XL
  • Head Support: easy to adjust too
  • Multiple Colors: solid colors, not patterns
  • Multi-Position Carrier
    • Facing in (lower height)
    • Facing in (higher height)
    • Facing Out
    • Back Carry

LilleBaby

LilleBaby has an award-winning carrier, designed by parents for parents! Some of the awards it has won are:

  • The Cribsie Award – 2019
  • Family Choice Award – 2019
  • National Parenting Prducts Award – 2019
  • ECO Excellence Award – 2016 (Best Baby Gear: Baby Carriers)
  • Mom Trends, Must Haves – 2014
  • GOLD: Right Start Best Baby Essentials – 2014

So, as you can see, this is an awesome carrier, and it has been throughout the years. For me, that is what stands out, it that it has been a consistent winner through the years. This is the carrier that got this company started too. What you’ll love about this carrier is that it is extremely high quality at a very affordable price point. Some other important aspect of this carrier:

  • Headrest
  • Breastfeeding: dual adjustable straps for breastfeeding
  • Comfortable straps
  • 100% Cotton
  • Lumbar Support
  • Hood for Protection/Privacy
  • Zippered Pocket: for carrying your essentials
  • Zipper Panel: this panel gives you the option to control your baby’s temperature by unzipping and having the breathable, mesh exposed
  • Multi-Position Carrier
    • Fetal Position (inward facing)
    • Infant Inward (inward facing)
    • Outward facing
    • Hip
    • Toddler Inward
    • Back Wearing

Baby Wraps

Like I mentioned before, there are different types of carriers. Above, we covered the typical “backpack” carriers. These are simple to use & very straightforward. You simply strap them on like a backpack, put your baby in and you are good to go. I want to cover two other types of carriers though. The next one being wraps. These may be slightly more complicated to use but once you get the hang of them, they are awesome to use. These are also a less expensive option than the “backpack” type carriers. So, lets look at a couple of the best baby carrier wraps.

Boba Wrap

The Boba Wrap is a very popular option for baby wraps. It might take a few times putting it on to get the hang of it, but that is true for most wraps you will use. They take a little bit to get use to but are really nice when you get them on. They keep your baby snug against you. I used this one on my baby when he was smaller. Boba also has carriers (like the “backpack” ones mentioned above) so if you like the brand but don’t think you will like wraps, check out their carriers.

Some aspects about the Boba Wraps that you’ll love:

  • Machine Washable
  • Soft Fabric: 95% cotton, 5% spandex
  • No Buckles
  • Cotton: the cotton aspect allows for airflow
  • Spandex: the spandex aspect allows the wrap to stretch, forms to your body
  • Easy to tie: 4 simple steps, takes some practice but you’ll pick up on it easy!
  • Mid/Long Use: fits your baby from birth to 35 lbs
  • One Size Fits All: the wrap will tie to your body, no matter what your size
  • Multiple Colors/ Prints

Like I mentioned before, Boba also has other carriers but they also carry other wraps. They make one that is Bamboo/Viscose/Cotton/Spandex. So again, look at the other options if you want to see what else is out there!

Baby K’tan

One cool aspect about Baby K’tan is that a percentage of each Baby K’tan Baby Carrier sale goes towards the American Heart Association. This company was started by two families who were raising babies with special needs, they wanted to carry their babies as much as possible. They created their own baby carriers and wraps that were designed around style, ease of use and comfort.

That is what is so nice about these baby wraps, the ease of use. With the Baby K’tan wrap, you get a “wrap” (buckle free, hands free, hassle free, etc.) without having to actually wrap it. What you’ll love about this carrier is that you put it on like a tshirt. Some other great aspects about the Baby K’tan Wrap:

  • Different Fabrics: they offer wraps with different fabrics
    • 100% cotton
    • 100% Polyester
  • Clean Fabric: made without harmful chemicals, formaldehyde and dyes
  • Buckle-free: no buckles, no loops, no clasps, no tying/excess fabric
  • DoubleLoop Design: designed for security
  • Lightweight
  • Different sizes: (XXS-XL) **this is important to note, with this carrier it is not a one size fits all for the parent
  • Machine Washable
  • Different Colors/Prints
  • Mid/Long Use: birth to 35 lbs
  • Breastfeeding: easy & discreet
  • Super Easy to Use!!!
  • Multi-Carrier: 5 different positions you can use on your newborn to infants

Sakura Bloom

Sakura Bloom offers a different wrap. This one is really cute too 🙂 It’s called the Sakura Bloom Ring Sling. Not only do I like this product, but I also like that when you buy one of these, they donate 5% to families in need. This is a family run business out of San Diego. The detail on these wraps is also really cool! These wraps are on the higher end of the scale (for wraps) but you are definitely paying for what you get. I would still say they are affordable though (around $60).

Some other aspect of the Sakura Bloom Ring Sling:

  • Use: from 8-35 lbs
  • High Quality Fabric: Eco-friendly
    • Bamboo
    • Linen
    • Silk
    • Raw Cotton
  • Lightweight
  • Soft
  • Multiple Colors
  • Rings: these wraps use a ring to adjust it
    • Copper
    • Rose Gold

Hiking Carriers

The last type of carrier that I want to cover is hiking baby carriers. These are carriers that you’ll love if you want to go hiking with your little one. They are more bulky but also more heavy-duty. With most of these, you can set them down and have them stay in a “standing up” position, that way you can leave your baby in the carrier and still set them down. These are going to be a little more expensive than the “backpack” carriers and the wraps, but you are also getting more with these products. So, lets look at a couple of the best hiking backpacks.

Osprey

Osprey makes really nice, heavy-duty baby carrier backpacks for hiking. This company started back in 1974 in California but has since relocated to Colorado. They make so many products for the adventurous type, baby carriers just being one of their products. Again, this backpack is more expensive than your typical baby carrier, but you’ll see why with these features:

  • Lightweight Aluminum: is lightweight but allows for stable, heavy carrying
  • Fully Framed: where you put your child is fully framed & padded
  • Harness is fleece-covered
  • Can set down: locking foot bar allows you to set the pack down with your child in it & it’s stable
  • Contoured Suspension: the contoured suspension and mesh stabilize the backpack so it doesn’t feel like you are carrying anything!
  • Hood: can serve multiple purposes; protection from the sun, privacy or protection from the rain
  • One size fits all
  • Zippered compartment: large compartment for your personal items (or diapers 🙂 )
  • Stretch Mesh Side Pockets: easy storage for those items you want to access easily
  • Handles: allows you to easily pick up the pack & allows your baby to hang on to something
  • Drool Pad: a removable pad (soft & washable 🙂 )
  • Stirrups: adjustable & removable stirrups for your little one (they are also padding & help with circulation)
  • Adjustable Torso: can adjust the torso depending on who is wearing the pack
  • Toy Attachment Loops
  • Guarantee: they will repair any damage or defect for any reason (no matter when it happened), if they can’t fix it they will send you a new one!

This is one of the more basic baby carriers that they offer. They have to other similar packs that are awesome, very similar to this one however they have a few more features (bigger storage, hip belt storage, etc.). While these are a little more expensive, you are definitely getting what you pay for. I think they are reasonably priced for what you are getting. Plus, you get a guarantee that you can’t beat!

Thule

Thule is another awesome brand that makes high quality products. These again, are a little more expensive. There are really two baby carriers they offer, we will focus on the more popular (less expensive one); the Thule Sapling. They also offer one called the Thule Sapling Elite that has more features. So if you like the Thule one I have listed out but are looking for a little more, look at the Thule Sapline Elite!

But, back to the Thule Sapling. Here are some of the awesome aspects of this pack:

  • Adjustable Back: can adjust the back panel & hip belt for parents
  • Adjustable Seat Height: for child
  • Inner thigh support (for child)
  • Storage: mesh pockets; pockets also on the hip belt
  • Hood: protects child from sun & other elements
  • Dual Access Loading: can load your child from the top or the side of the carrier
  • Removable Stirrups
  • Water Reservoir pocket
  • Stand: so you can set your backpack down with child in it
  • Breathable: breathable back panel provides padding & support – keeps you cool

Deuter

One last one I want to cover is the Deuter Kid Comfort Child Carrier. This one is similar to the other two, just another different option. Here are some things to note about the Deuter Carrier:

  • Adjustable:
    • adjustable seat & foot rest for the child
    • adjustable harness for parent – adjustable chest strap
  • 5-point safety harness
  • Breathable: soft, breathable fabric (mesh)
  • Lightweight: aluminum frame
  • Locking Kickstand: you can set your child down while in the carrier
  • Dual Handles: easy to pick up
  • Hood: to protect your child from the sun/elements
  • Raincover: sold separately but can be attached & it completely covers your child/backpack for protection
  • Side Entry: put your child in through the side with easy buckles
  • Load Adjustment Straps
  • Material: airy & soft material (washable in the foot area)
  • 3M reflector
  • Folds for transport
  • Pockets
    • two side pockets
    • front slot pocket
    • large bottom zippered pocket
  • Warranty: limited lifetime

Of course, there are so many other baby carriers out there. These are some of the best of the best though. If you have found one that you love that’s not listed, comment below, I would love to hear about it! Also, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

All the best,

Abby

  1. Hello Abby

This article is very helpful as I have 2 young children and they are heavy to carry!
I had not heard of a hiking carrier before, this sounds great as we do like to get out for long walks in the country as much as possible, are the hiking carriers a bit heavier than the usual ones do you know?

    1. Hi Andrew!

Yes, the hiking ones will be heavier than your typical baby carrier, due to the build of the backpack. The normal baby carriers will typically weigh around 3-4 pounds whereas your hiking carriers will be more around 7 pounds. But keep in mind they are designed for the weight, so they won’t feel heavy when you have them on. Hope this helps!

      Abby
