Hey there, momma! Looking for the best baby monitor? I’m hoping I can help you out!

To be honest, to start out, I didn’t use a baby monitor. My house isn’t that big, so no matter where I am in the house, I can hear my little one. As time went by though, I saw the need for one. So, if you are on the fence about getting one, I would recommend it. There are different types of baby monitors, which I will get into a little later, so you don’t need to get anything fancy. But, I’m sure you will find too that having one is really nice.

For me, there were two instances when baby monitors were nice. First, when I wanted to go outside. Whether I was just sitting outside or doing some work outside, it was nice to be able to have the monitor with me so I knew exactly when my little one woke up. For this, I just got the basic baby monitor. Nothing fancy, no camera. Second, is at night. For this one, I recommend getting one with a camera. This one is more for watching your baby, not necessarily for hearing them. It’s nice to be able to see what your little one is doing and you don’t have to walk in the room to check on them…with the chance of waking them up!

The camera baby monitor can also be handy when you are traveling. So if you leave your little one somewhere you can see exactly what they are doing.

I want to list out the types of baby monitors for you and then go into the best baby monitors of 2020.

Types of Baby Monitors

At a very high level, there are two main types of baby monitors. Audio and video+audio. Within these two categories though, the baby monitors can vary. You can have the very basic ones, where you simply just plug them into the wall. While they can also get as “fancy” as being able to connect to your smartphone and you can control them that way. You can also have some that do more than just act as a baby monitor. For example, some can also act as a nightlight or sound machine.

If you are struggling to figure out which one to get, ask yourself these questions. Hopefully, this will help guide you in your search. Also remember, you may not use a baby monitor very much in the beginning…but they aren’t just for babies. There are many moms who say that they use their baby monitor more with their toddlers than they ever did with their baby!

So, back to those questions. Ask yourself these questions to help guide you in your search:

  • How wide of a range will you need?
  • How long are you going to use the baby monitor?
  • Do you want to be able to control it from your smartphone?
  • Do you want more features than just a baby monitor?

If you are on the fence about a video monitor, but plan on using it frequently, I would recommend just getting one with a camera. As I mentioned before, they are really nice to use with toddlers and having a camera at that age is really helpful!

Now, lets get into the best baby monitors of 2020. We’ll start with the basic ones; audio.

VTech Audio Baby Monitor

This is about as basic as they come but it does the job! If you are looking for a monitor that you can just use around the house, one in the baby’s room and one with you…this is a good option. Here are the features you will get with the VTech monitor:

  • 1,000 ft range
  • crystal clear sound
  • secure transmission
  • digital technology eliminates background noise & prevents interference
  • 5 level sound indicator
  • 0 to 5 level volume control
  • mute option (can mute the monitor and the visual sound indicator will indicate when sound is detected)
  • battery operated option (so you can either plug it in or use batteries if you plan on being outside or something)

This monitor is VERY simple and easy to use. Like I said, this is a great option if you plan on just using it around the house or you don’t think you will be using a baby monitor very much. It is very affordable and straightforward to use!

VTech Baby Monitor – Talk Back Intercom

This is another audio monitor from VTech but I would say “one step up” from the last one I talked about. This is still a very basic, simple baby monitor but you have the ability to talk to your little one through it…which the last one didn’t have that capability. With this one, here are the other features that you will get with it:

  • one parent unit with one baby unit
  • crystal clear transmission
  • elimination of white noise
  • 5 level sound indicator
  • two-way talk intercom
  • rechargeable parent unit – 18 hours between charges
  • battery option – you can also use batteries in the parent unit
  • belt clip on the parent unit
  • 1,000 ft. range
  • vibrating sound-alert on the parent unit
  • night light

Philips Avent Audio Baby Monitor

You probably know the Philips brand from the baby bottles and pacifiers. They are a very well-known and trusted brand! This is more of a basic baby monitor from Philips. Next, I will show a monitor from them that has more features but, of course, will also have a higher price point. This one though, is your basic audio baby monitor. With this, you will get the following features:

  • zero interference
  • private connection
  • night light
  • lullabies (5 different ones to pick from)
  • talk-back feature – talk remotely to your baby
  • monitor the temp in your baby’s room
  • 1,000 ft. range
  • LED light
  • nighttime friendly mode (dim display and sound)
  • rechargeable parent unit with 18 hours per charge

Philips Avent Audio Baby Monitor Plus Projector

I saved this one as one of the last ones for the audio section because this is more than just a basic baby monitor. There is no camera, however it also works as a projector. I don’t have this monitor but I do have a projector in my baby’s room and it has been a lifesaver! He absolutely loves it! When he wakes up during the night, most of the time he will just lay and watch the projector on the ceiling and fall back asleep on his own!

So, with this monitor, here are the features that come with it:

  • secure & private connection
  • zero interference with other devices (other baby monitors, cell phones, etc.)
  • starry night light projector
  • nighttime mode (can dim the lights, display and sound)
  • cordless option (18 hours per charge)
  • room temperature sensor & alerts
  • talk back feature (you can talk to your baby from anywhere in the house)
  • night light
  • lullabies (can pick from 5 tunes)
  • crystal clear sound
  • 1,000 ft range

What is nice about this monitor is it has ECO mode. What this does is automatically minimizes the audio transmission and increases your battery time. In other words, the closer you are to your baby, the less power that is needed!

Hatch Baby Monitor

I saved this one for last in the audio baby monitors since it is an audio baby monitor, but it also does so much more! This one is a great option if you know you don’t want a monitor with a camera but also aren’t sure how much you will be using it. Yes, this works as a baby monitor but it also works as a sounds machine, night light and clock! So you will for sure be getting use out of it…even if you don’t use the monitor feature! Here are additional features of the Hatch that you’ll love:

  • sound machine (sounds, lullabies & white noise options)
  • night light (can pick from a rainbow of colors)
  • time to rise option (can program it to cue your child for naps, bedtime or morning)
  • two-way audio monitor
  • LED clock (can adjust the brightness or turn it off completely)
  • listen or talk with your child through the monitor feature
  • safe & secure to ensure privacy
  • alexa-enabled (can change light, sounds and more without lifting a finger)
  • cord-free option (so it can be used when the power goes out or when traveling)
  • control from anywhere (Wi-Fi enabled)
  • toddler lock (you can disable the buttons)

This monitor will connect with your smartphone, so you can control everything from there. Even when you aren’t home.

Those were a few of the highest rated audio baby monitors. But, like I said before, a lot of the time it is really nice to be able to see your baby. Especially once they become toddlers! So now lets look at some of the best baby monitors that have cameras.

Hello Baby Wireless Video Baby Monitor

In my opinion, this is a good “in-between” for an audio monitor and a video monitor. Some video monitors are pretty fancy but this is a pretty basic one. So it is a step up from an audio baby monitor since it does have a camera but it won’t have all the “bells and whistles” that some video monitors have. But, the nice part about this is that it is at a reasonable price point because of that.

This is an awesome option though if you are looking for a monitor with a camera but at a reasonable price point. This one is awesome quality for the price! Here are the features that you will get with this monitor:

  • crystal clear image (no grainy or pixelated image)
  • automatic night vision (so you can see your baby during the night as well)
  • Infrared LEDs automatically adjust to the level of light in the room
  • rechargeable battery (lasts 7-8 hours with screen on)
  • 960 ft. range
  • two-way talk (so you can talk to your baby through the monitor)
  • sound LED indicator (row of LED lights will indicate you when your baby is crying
  • audio only mode (this way you can only use the video when you want to)
  • room temperature sensor
  • 8 lullabies to pick from
  • one parent monitor can be paired with 4 child unit cameras (so you could have one for each kid but all on one monitor)
  • optical pan and tilt
  • 2x digital zoom
  • 8 levels alarms
  • one year warranty included

This one also comes in two different colors; white and black or blue and white. Again, this is a nice option because it has a lot of features all under $50.

Infant Optics Video Baby Monitor

This is a very highly rated video baby monitor with a lot of awesome features. With thousands and thousands of reviews, it has 4.5/5 stars. What is so nice about this one is it doesn’t require WiFi. One momma said that she is going on two years and it is still by far the best baby purchase! Here are some of the awesome features you will get with the Infant Optics monitor:

  • sound activated LED bar for awareness in the dark (or when the screen is dark)
  • remote pan/tilt/digital zoom
  • alarm function
  • two-way talk
  • remote thermometer
  • expandable up to 4 cameras
  • scan mode
  • invisible IR night vision
  • 12 hours of battery life with audio only mode
  • 8 hours of battery life with life screen
  • spare monitor unit charging cable
  • crisp, clear image
  • normal lens
  • optical zoom lens
  • lightweight
  • portable

This monitor will allow you to pan, tilt or zoom with the camera, so you will have full viewing control. Again, really helpful when it comes to that toddler age 🙂

Nanit Plus Video Baby Monitor

This baby monitor has a littler higher price point but you are getting what you pay for. With this one, you mount the camera to the wall and it connects to your phone where you can watch your little one. What is nice about this, is that you can of course connect it to your phone (IOS or Android) but also to your Kindle Fire or Echo. So just mount the camera above the crib and easily connect it to whatever device you prefer. That way, you can access the HD live stream no matter where you are. You can hear when they need you & be able to speak back to them!

Here are some other features of the Nanit:

  • real-time sound & motion alert
  • works even when your internet goes down
  • wide-angle view
  • works with Amazon Alexa (so it is Alexa Enabled)
  • two-way audio
  • monitor the temperature & humidity
  • sleep tracking (gives you your baby’s sleep stats each morning)
  • time lapse highlight reel of your baby’s sleep (aka, you can watch the entire night in seconds!)
  • personalized, science-backed sleep guidance & tips (in the Nanit App)
  • safe & secure (data safe & your account is secure)
  • 1 year limited warranty

The parents who own the Nanit love the features that it offers. Many parents pointed out that it is really helpful for date nights because they can watch their little one when they aren’t even alone! They say this baby monitor is a must-have for traveling and date nights! Since this one is super easy to pop on and off the wall mount, its very convenient to travel with! So this baby monitor is an awesome option if you plan on using your baby monitor a lot or if you plan on traveling frequently.

Motorola Halo Video Baby Monitor

This is a very similar option to Nanit that I talked about previously. Again, this one has a higher price point but you are paying for all of the features that you will be getting with this monitor. And if you plan on using a baby monitor a lot, it will be worth it! So this one also lets you see your child no matter where you are; whether you are in the house or not. This one will easily attach to your crib (no more tools needed to attach this one!) and then will connect to your phone.

What is really nice about this one, is that the camera will easily come out of the mount so this is another great option for if you plan on traveling. But, in addition to that – this one has some more awesome features (even more features than the Nanit):

  • preloaded lullabies (soothing sounds)
  • bedtime stories
  • night light (7 different color options)
  • detachable camera
  • easily attaches to the crib
  • light show projector
  • connects to your smartphone (mobile viewing)
  • video recording & storage (this requires a subscription, though)
  • video sleep diary (also will require a subscription)
  • sleep activity insights
  • growth & development tracker
  • sleep & parenting tips
  • crisp, clear display
  • real-time video
  • infrared night vision
  • Hubble Baby Smart Sleep Assistant (I’ll talk about this more below)
  • two-way speaker

Like I mentioned before, you can easily control this one from your smartphone. So, the night light, projector & sounds you can all control from your phone. And of course the camera 🙂

The Hubble Baby Smart Sleep Assistant will help you keep track of your baby’s sleep hours, number of feeding times, diaper changes and pump sessions. So you really are getting much more than just a baby monitor with this one. If you plan on traveling or having multiple children this is a really good option. You can easily travel with it and it makes it really simple to watch your little one no matter where you are!

CasaCam Video Baby Monitor

This is another good option for if you are looking to get more out of your baby monitor. This CasaCam is different than the last couple in that it doesn’t’t connect to your phone (it comes with a monitor that you can watch your baby on) but it still has more features than just your basic video baby monitor.

Here are the features that you will get with the CasaCam:

  • large 5″ touchscreen
  • night vision
  • night light
  • charging cradle
  • lullabies
  • temperature monitoring
  • 2x digital zoom
  • two-way audio
  • HD image
  • pan (270 degrees) & tilt (110 degrees) options
  • sound activated LED lights
  • audio only mode
  • expandable for up to 4 cameras
  • single/split/quad display options
  • private & secure connection
  • free warranty & tech support

So this one will work similar to the other ones but you are controlling the monitor with the tablet that it comes with, not from your phone. Again, this is another good option for if you plan on traveling. The camera is portable but it also has the option to charge with a power bank (via a USB cord). You will have to buy this separately but it is an awesome feature for if you plan on traveling. The power cord for this monitor though is also 9 ft. One more feature that I love about this is that the monitor can charge on the cradle it sits on. So you can just “drop and charge” it!

Victure Video Baby Monitor

I want to list one more option for a video baby monitor that has a lower price point but is still a great option if you are looking for a video baby monitor. This one won’t have as many features as some of them that I listed above but will still get you good, high quality video so you can keep on eye on your little one. With this monitor, here are the features that you will get with it:

  • night vision
  • motion alerts
  • two-way audio
  • automatic night vision
  • cloud or SD storage
  • unlimited shared members (so you can share your account with family members)
  • WiFi connection
  • anti-noise technology
  • 120 degree wide angle lens

This is such an awesome option if you don’t want to spend a lot on a baby monitor but want one with video. This one is less than $50 (it’s around $30) but gives you all of the basic features you will want and need for a baby monitor. It’s easy to use and affordable!
