This is a post for you, momma! All you mommas with littles know how hard it is when any sickness hits your house. Especially if you have young kids or babies, it can be scary when they are sick and can’t communicate what’s wrong. The nights can be long and the days, tiring.
I strongly believe that a healthy household starts with you! There are so many people that say once you have kids, your kids always come first. I do believe that to an extent. But I also believe that there are times when you need to put yourself first. And your health is one of those times. If you aren’t healthy, how can you care for your kids?
Since my goal is to focus on natural remedies and solutions, I wanted to write a post about something I LOVE and use every day. Elderberry syrup. This is something I take every day to help stay healthy. And if I do end up getting sick, my sickness is never as bad and I typically tend to get back on my feet sooner than if I haven’t been taking my elderberry syrup. My husband is the same way!
So, I want to look at some of the best Elderberry syrup out there and hopefully you can find one that you’ll love. I have tried a few different ones and have liked them all so far. I have found that the end result is the same, they just differ in taste and texture. So in the end, it will probably be a personal preference.
Let’s dig in to the best of Elderberry Syrup for 2020!
If you aren’t familiar with Elderberry Syrup, let me quickly introduce you to it and why I love it. Elderberry is a berry that comes from a Sambucus tree. It is the most commonly used medicinal plant in the world, where Native Americans would use it to treat infections. In today’s world, most people will take it to treat cold and flu symptoms.
While I usually increase the amount I take when I am sick, I don’t take Elderberry only when I get sick. I usually take it every day to prevent getting sick.
Elderberry is awesome for this because it is packed with nutrients! They are extremely high in antioxidants. They are low in calories but high in vitamin C, fiber, anthocyanins (which is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory effects) and also are a good source of phenolic acids (again, another antioxidant) and flavnols.
Because of all that the Elderberry contains, it has been known to help fight harmful bacteria and support the immune system.
I have found this to be true. Even when being around others who are sick, I seem to be more protected. And if I do end up getting sick, it’s not nearly as bad and I am able to get over it faster.
They also make other forms of Elderberry that you can take, such as gummies, drops and capsules. They also make Elderberry products for children, which I would also highly recommend but I will cover that in another post!
Let’s get into the products now 🙂
Honey Gardens Elderberry Syrup
This was the first Elderberry Syrup that I tried and I loved it! I found that this one has a really nice taste to it. Plus, I love the ingredients in it. This one is also very reasonably priced.
- Grade A Raw Honey
- Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
Propolis and Echinacea are two of the ingredients I’m guessing you probably aren’t familiar with. Don’t be scared away by this though. These are awesome ingredients. Propolis is something produced by bees. It is a mixture of saliva and beeswax & is gathered from tree buds, sap flowers or other flower sources. This is an awesome ingredient because propolis is known to have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties.
Echinacea is the other ingredient you probably haven’t heard of. This is a herb where the leaves, flowers and root are all used in making medicine. People commonly take this to help fight the common cold and flu!
Apple Cider Vinegar is another amazing product for you. You may have heard of the ACV challenge, where you would take a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar each day because of it’s amazing properties (just to list a few, ACV is known to help with tummy issues, help with weight loss, boost energy, help control blood sugar and SO MUCH MORE). But, if you have tried this, you probably know that it doesn’t taste the best. So this is awesome because this syrup actually tastes GOOD but you can’t tell there is ACV in it!
With this syrup, you can take one teaspoon every two hours, not exceeding 5 servings a day. I like that about this syrup, you can take it multiple times during the day. With some of the syrups, you are only supposed to take it once during the day. So, with this one I would typically just take it once a day if I was healthy. If I felt something coming on or I was sick, I would take it throughout the day! I would not recommend giving this one to children since it has honey in it.
Gaia Herbs Organic Black Elderberry Syrup
This is another syrup that i have tried. This one has a thicker consistency from the one I mentioned previously. What I love about this one is how concentrated it is. In each teaspoon of syrup, there are 14.5 grams of organic elderberries! This one also has a short list of ingredients:
- Black Elderberry fruit juice concentrate
- Acerola fruit dried extract
- Vitamin C (from Acerola)
Now, the vitamin C comes from Acerola Cherry fruit extract which is a rich source of naturally occurring Vitamin C. With this syrup, it is also safe to use with kids, although they won’t take the recommend serving size on the bottle. They do make a bottle specifically for kids, but if you didn’t want to buy another bottle you could all just use this one.
For adults, you just take 1 teaspoon every day. You can do this up to twice a day. If you do want to use this with your children as well, follow these instructions:
- Ages 1-2: 1/8 teaspoon
- Ages 3-5: 1/4 teaspoon
- Ages 6-12: 1/2 teaspoon
As with you, your kids can take that recommended dosage up to 2 times each day. This is a good option for if you do have kids because even if you didn’t plan on giving this to your kids, if they end up getting sick you have the option to give it to them. With some of them, they have naturally occurring alcohol in them which you wouldn’t want to give your kids.
Nature’s Way Organic Sambucus Elderberry Syrup
As with the last syrup I mentioned, this one is also certified USDA organic. This syrup is made with full-spectrum black elderberry extract. This is also another option that you are able to give to children. Again, just at a smaller dosage.
What you’ll love about this Elderberry Syrup:
- tastes great!
- USDA organic
- gluten free
- kosher certified
- dairy free
- soy free
- nut free
- no artificial colors or flavors
This syrup is made from European Black Elder. They use premium elderberries though – black elderberries that have a higher level of naturally-occurring flavonoids. This is awesome because in each serving you are getting 100 mg of black elderberry extract.
This is another one that tastes great, so it’s another good option for if you wanted to give it to your kids as well. For adults, you can take 2 teaspoons each day (but you can do that up to 4 times each day). For kids, they can take 1 teaspoon daily (or for intensive use they can do that up to 4 times each day).
Garden of Life mykind Organics Elberberry Immune Syrup
This Elderberry syrup is a unique blend that they have created from organic extracts of herbs combined with antioxidants. The ingredient list on this syrup is a little longer from the others but it contains all great things for you! Plus, all the herbs used in this are sourced from sustainable organic farms and they use an organic, non-GMO extraction method. This means they don’t use conventional corn alcohol or other harsh chemicals in the extraction process.
There is a lot that I love about this syrup. To start though, here are a few:
- contains organic Echinacea
- contains zinc & vitamin C
- USDA organic
- non GMO project verified
- no added sugars
- gluten free
- dairy free
- soy & wheat free
- peanut free
- no artificial flavors or colors
What I also love about this syrup though is the ingredients. I touched on this a little before, but I want to point out exactly what you are getting. Again, like I said before they concentrated their own unique organic extracts of black elderberry and echinacea and combine them with antioxidant rich vitamin C (from organic amla berry), organic rosemary extract and zinc (from organic guava). All of this combined makes an awesome, highly concentrated immune system support!
For adults (13 yrs and older), you can take 6.5 mL up to twice a day. For children under 13, they can take 1/2 of that serving once a day. There is a serving cup included, so you will know how much to take 🙂
New Chapter Elderberry Syrup
For those of you who are familiar with my blog, you may have read my post of prenatal vitamins. I talked about the New Chapter Prenatals that I look & loved them! This Elderberry syrup is from that same company! You will notice that with this one, you can pick if you want it in syrup, capsule or powder form. Personally, I prefer the syrup but you can look at the powder and capsule on the same page as the syrup & decide which one you prefer (just click on the image below and it will bring you to the New Chapter page).
This is some powerful syrup though. 64x concentrated elderberry! This is another great option to use with kids as well (although not a kid specific product). It is naturally sweetened with Grade A honey and uses sustainable sourced ingredients. New Chapter uses high quality Haschberg type black elderberries from Austria. These contain super-dark flavonoids. If you aren’t familiar with flavonoids, these are awesome for you. Basically, this is what is in fruits and vegetables that make them so good for you – it is a naturally occurring plant pigment.
Other aspects about this New Chapter Elderberry Syrup that you’ll love:
- non GMO project verified
- gluten free
- 100% vegetarian
- no artificial flavors or colors
- FDA compliant
- sweetened only with pure honey
- no corn syrup
- no glycerin
- no agave syrup/fructose
You really can’t go wrong with this one, no matter what form you take it in. I haven’t tried the capsules or the powder so I can’t speak to those. But I really do love the syrup!
Dr. Dunner Sambu Guard Elderberry
I love the focus and mission of this brand. They are focused on naturally supporting the body. So, they leverage those things in nature that are going to naturally support you when you feel weak. They use the beneficial, restorative and fortifying effects of plants and herbs to help you feel your best.
They use wild-grown elderberry found in Switzerland mixed with Echinacea and vitamin C (you will notice a pattern of these ingredients amount the Elderberry syrups that I list, you know they are important!). This is what I love about this one though. I truly believe we are provided everything we need around us in nature to live. That means leveraging these plants and herbs! And that is exactly what this syrup does. They use high quality ingredients from local farmers.
I also love that they recognize that our immune system is our body’s first line of defense, and it is under attack 24/7. This is why I take my elderberry every day! You never know when you are going to get sick and this helps protect you from that by boosting your immune system!
Some other benefits and features of this Elderberry syrup that you’ll love:
- no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives
- gluten free
- lactose free
- made with organic & wild ingredients
- highly concentrated herbs; haschberg elderberry, elderflower & echinacea
- high in anthocyanins
Like I mentioned above, this syrup contains elderflower and echinacea which means that you’ll have some added benefits. With elderflower, this can help support a healthy respiratory and inflammation response as well as flush toxins from your body! Echinacea can help stimulate microphage activity which is when your white blood cells destroy negative cells. It also can support a healthy respiratory and inflammation response as well!
Pukka Herbs Elderberry Syrup
This is a more unique Elderberry syrup that I have found. This syrup is a blend of organic ingredients including ginger and thyme. These are ingredients you probably won’t find in other Elderberry syrups! Along with ginger and thyme are other organic herbs and elderberry juice and manuka honey. These are the highest organic grade, sustainable cultivated herbs that will do wonders for your body. Don’t underestimate the power of herbs and what they are capable of doing for your body.
Like I said before, I strongly believe that the best healers for our bodies are what can be found around us in nature. And this syrup, utilizes those things.
- organic elderberry juice concentrate
- organic manuka honey 14+
- organic thyme leaf tincture
- organic aniseed tincture
- organic licorice root tincture
- organic trikatu tincture
- organic peppermint leaf essential oil
What I love about this syrup, is all the different ingredients that aren’t in other Elderberry syrups. These are ingredients that are so good for you!
But, there may be a few of these ingredients that you aren’t familiar with. So, let me explain a few of these. First, aniseed tincture is a herb that is used for medicinal purposes. Sometimes it is used in herbal tea to improve the flavor. But, it is also used to treat nausea, colic, gas and intestinal cramping.
The licorice used is from Khazakstand and Spain. Licorice is unique in that it also helps with gastrointestinal problems but will also help repair the stomach lining. The benefits you will probably be most interested in though are the anti-inflammatory and immune-boosted properties that it contains.
Trikatu Tincture is an organic mixture of ginger, black pepper and long pepper.
You’ll notice that with a lot of these ingredients, they have to do with a healthy gut/stomach. This is important to having a health body! Even if you don’t think you have intestinal issues, it’s important to make sure your body is operating properly and efficiently since how your body absorbs nutrients directly affects how well your body fights off bacteria!
This syrup is also vegetarian, wheat free, gluten free, dairy free, soya free and has no added sugar. So if you are looking to get a little more out of your Elderberry syrup, this is an awesome option. Overall, just awesome ingredients and benefits for your body!
Zhou Nutrition Elderberry Syrup
This is another option that has apple cider vinegar in it. This one is similar to some of the other in that it has its own unique formula that combines organic elderberry, organic raw honey, organic apple cider vinegar, propolis and echinacea. As I’ve said throughout all of this, these are ingredients that are awesome for your immune system!
This one also is made without any artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners. It’s also non-GMO and vegetarian.
Not only do I love the ingredients in this one too but this is another syrup that you can take throughout the day. Make sure you shake it before taking any, but you can take 1 teaspoon every two hours…up to three times a day. I love this because if you are healthy, I would just take it once a day. But if you feel something coming on or you know your body is fighting off a cold or the flu, you can take it throughout the day to give your body the boost it needs to fight off that sickness.
Note that this is not a good option though if you want to give it to kids. This syrup is not for kids under the age of 18. Also, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, I would probably pick another syrup!
Norm’s Farms Black Elderberry
This is another one that I love. This syrup uses farm-fresh North American native elderberries. This means it is not from European concentrate. I love how simple this is. Again, another syrup with a short ingredient list!
This is an ingredient list you can actually remember! It is just an Elderberry fruit extract containing Sambucus Nigra, Sambucus Canadensis and water! Not only are the ingredients simple but the way they extract the elderberry juice is also simple! They use a gentle water process to extract the Elderberry juice and then concentrate it! The formula they came up with will work to help you fight off not only cold symptoms but also allergy symptoms!
This syrup also has:
- no added alcohol
- no sugars
- no artificial sweeteners
- no artificial ingredients
The taste of this one will be a little different from the others I mentioned. The other syrups, for the most part, will have a sweeter taste to them. With this one, it will be more on the dryer side, tasting more like a dry red wine. I prefer a sweeter syrup but some of you might not like them so sweet. So this would be a good option for it you don’t like it so sweet!
For this syrup, take 1 teaspoon per day. This is another syrup you can give to children. For children, ages 2-12, they can take 1/2 teaspoon up to two times a day!
Anthoimmune Organic Elderberry Syrup
The last Elderberry syrup I want to point out is Anthoimmune. There isn’t a whole lot I can say about this one. It’s simple and straightforward. What I really like about this one though, and what I think makes them unique against the other ones, is that they actually grow their own elderberries and elderflowers!
In Dresden, Maine (USA), they grow their own antioxidant rich elderberries and elderflowers that are certified organic. Both of these flowers and berries are harvested when they are at their peak and then processed immediately. This is important to be able to capture and preserve the phytonutrients that are in the raw fruit and flowers.
The blend in this Elderberry syrup is simple:
- Organic American Elderberry
- Organic European Elderberry
- Organic Blueberry
- Organic American Elder Flower
I also like that this one has blueberries in it as well, this is different from the others listed above too. If you are familiar with Maine, you know that they are known for their amazing blueberries. So I like that not only this syrup has blueberries in it but also that they come right from Maine! If you don’t know, blueberries are PACKED full of antioxidants and the benefits they provide to your body are endless! Just a few benefits though, it helps with healthy bones, skin health, lowering your blood pressure, managing diabetes, promotes a healthy heart, aids in healthy digestion and SO MUCH MORE!
All you need with this is a single serving which will support your immune system & provide your body with powerful antioxidant support. You can take 1/2 teaspoon once or twice a day! Like a few of the others though, you can take this one up to 4 times a day. For children, they can take 1/2-1 teaspoon a day (for those 6-12 years old) and 1/4-1/2 teaspoon a day for those 2-5 years old.
Have you tried different forms of Elderberry? Which is your favorite? Leave a comment below!
All the best,
